PHOTOGRAPHY AND VIDEO ART

Gap/Seam, 2021
video, 14’ 30”

Jun-yuan Hong was born in Taiwan in 1981. He is currently a
PhD candidate in Art creation and theory at Tainan University
of Art. His works have been selected for Rencontres
internationales Paris, Berlin revolution film festival, Next
art Tainan award, Afias Spain moving images festival,
Copenhagen 60 seconds film festival.
He uses cinema and video art as a channel for expressing
deep feelings that are inaccessible to the verbal, starting
from the elaboration of conditions of personal and collective,
biographical and historical unease. In the work Gap/Seam
expresses a contronymic concept synthesised in the Mandarin
character “縫”, which, depending on whether it is pronounced
in the fourth or second tone, takes on the meaning of
“laceration” or “seam”: a concept materialised in the borders
that define, for example, the prison environment. The
dramaturgy adheres to the feeling of the subject, a prisoner
who through suffering and torture will seek a contradictory
liberation towards the sea. The work is dedicated to White
terror, the period of political persecution experienced by
Taiwanese citizens between 1947 and 1987.
