Selina Mayer was born in Wandsworth, London, in
1988. She has participated in numerous exhibitions and
competitions specialisised in photography where she has
received recognition particularly for her nude work: among
other countries, her work has been exhibited in Hungary,
Austria, UK, Italy, USA and Japan. In her photography we
can find the experiences of female emancipation of Julia
Margaret Cameron, Francesca Woodman and Tina Modotti,
not so much in the use of forms as in the attitude that subtly
combines in the photograph the search for an intimate
awareness and liberation in the public and political spheres.
For Mayer, the recurring themes of the forest and the nude
signify a move away from a “civil” dimension dominated by
the modern and the masculine: a romantic approach to the
search for profound and symbolic connections with nature,
a search for the myth of the primordial, which also has the
flavour of a very contemporary rebellion against the masculine
and sexualising gaze of the media. In the forest, Mayer
reconstitutes the community of her relationships with friends
and artists who pose nude for her in natural environment.
